Dairy free coconut hazelnut latte

Some days, I wake up in the morning, have a cup of coffee and a smoothie and I am geared to go all day. Then there are days like today…. I’ll spare the gory details, but a bluh work morning being intermittently interrupted by a pukey baby and computer woes makes a long afternoon.

This delightful latte has a fraction of the sugar your coffeehouse adds, but still has enough subtle sweetness (and…. thank god caffeine) to add some serenity to your day. You can pretend, as I did, that you have saved time by not going to the coffeehouse and zone out on TV for a short time amidst the kid/spouse/life chaos. Plus you can mentally spend the 5 dollars you would have spent on a half bottle of wine. You are welcome.

Back to the latte… If you do not own an espresso maker, make the investment. It is one of the best purchases I have made. Here is the one I use. Inexpensive, makes great coffee and has an awesome milk frother and heater.

The baristas of the world may scoff at my version of a latte because I do not add both steamed and clothed milk. With all of love and light I can muster at the moment, I suggest they back off today.

Again, back to the latte… depending on exactly how much of a pick me up is needed, you will match 1 part brewed espresso with 1 part brother milk. For the best frothing action, try placing the stem in the center of your container of milk, close to the top. The milk will double in amount. I use dairy free coconut milk from Trader Joe’s because it gives a hint of coconut  sweetness and I don’t have to deal with the upset stomach dairy can induce sometimes. I add very little sugar to the coffee, then pour the brother milk into thru coffee cup.

Now the best part… caramel. (I have mentioned it was a not great day, right?) Try to get real caramel without artificial additives–it really does have a different flavor and more bodied texture. Drizzle that goodness on top of the milk and it slowly melts into the coffee.

I do sincerely hope your day is fabulous and this recipe just sounded tasty.

Namaste (and sorry for being grouchy)
